Watching a football match and edge definition of the players is sharp enough: overall clarity and detail is fine, with skin tones healthy-looking and with a slight push to warm looking complexions. So that means you'll have Freeview channels, apps, and plenty of connections for HDMI and DVD players — all without breaking the bank. This is a fairly standard compromise on smaller screens, as you’ll not easily spot the resolution shortfall given a typical viewing distance. Fortunately screen uniformity was good, so at least the blacks (dark greys) weren’t overly polluted with light spillage but the screen is noticeably paler at the edges, although it wasn’t usually noticeable with normal content. The Picture Menu has 3 accurate Modes with a trio of Hollywood’s – Day, Night, Pro – where the latter supports Toshiba’s auto-calibration device which now seems to have disappeared from the UK.However, the compatibility with HDR10 and HLG is more symbolic; there is a lack of display brightness for “real” HDR effects. We’ll be honest and say we never know quite what to expect from a Toshiba TV as they have ranged from excellent to ‘not quite so impressive’, in the past, so let’s see what the current line-up has in for us.

There was not much we could do with the gamma response but things were certainly much improved post calibration. Tick the ‘AI on Video’ box in the menus, and the TV will auto-select an appropriate image preset, as long as the programme material is flagged with informative metadata. Dialogue is clear and easy to follow and both the voices and the sound effects are balanced well with any background music. In short, whereas standard sets can display around 16 million colours, HDR can manage over a billion. It’s the same remote we’ve encountered on previous Toshiba TVs, which means a big and old-school looking wand with quick access buttons for Prime Video, Netflix and Freeview Play.Similarly, picture presets comprise Natural, Cinema, Sports and Dynamic, but there’s not a great deal of difference between them. A watch of His Dark Materials on iPlayer in the Smart mode showed that, while the audio will do a job for casual TV watchers, it could be improved upon. If you’re looking for a 4K smart TV that has more powerful audio though, be sure to check out some similar models mentioned above. Nothing has changed in terms of the smart platform with the same streaming and on-demand catch-up apps (iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5, etc). But if you’re looking forward to enjoying every detail of your favourite movie in a bigger living room, this might not be the best choice.
